Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper is one of the most popular sodas in America. It was created in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton and named after his partner Dr. Pemberton’s daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Adele Pemberton. The drink is unique because it contains 23 flavors which give it its signature taste that nobody can seem to replicate! But what if I told you that there was an ingredient in there that you might not expect? Find out more about this unusual recipe behind Dr Pepper: America’s favorite soda here!

Start the blog post by telling what Dr Pepper is. Share some history about it and how it came to be. Then, talk about the ingredients in a bit more depth before delving into one of these 23 flavors: citric acid or phosphoric acid!

Drinkable History

The drink was first invented by pharmacist Charles Alderton after he saw his customers clamoring for drinks that were free of alcohol during prohibition. Together with business partner Dr. John Schieffelin Pemberton (who had developed an addiction to morphine), they created Coca-Cola – only this time without any coca leaves because they couldn’t get them at the time! However, there was another customer demanding a different type of recipe altogether

The Dr. Pepper recipe is a closely guarded secret.

The caffeine-free, carbonated soft drink was created in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton as a flavourful and refreshing beverage for people to enjoy after their meals. It’s been made with 23 ingredients since 1909 when the company introduced the 12-ounce bottle size that we still use today (it used to come in multiples of six ounces). What are these ingredients? Well, it turns out there are only 11 and each one has an important role to play.

Dr Pepper contains: Carbonic acid, natural flavours, sodium benzoate (preservative), caffeine from various sources including coffee beans or tea leaves, caramel colouring derived from either burnt sugar or corn syrup “In the 1870s, a pharmacist and confectioner named Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas added vanilla extract to his homemade root beer recipe. He meant for this new concoction-to be sold as medicine. However, it soon became popular with townspeople who enjoyed its unusual flavor.”

What on Earth could they be?

This is why Dr Pepper comes in a bottle! It’s not just because of the beverage laws or that people might want to avoid drinking out of plastic bottles? Turns out there are some complicated reasons behind why we enjoy our favorite soda from glass containers today.
