You are much less likely to make a mistake if you always save before performing major changes, and then use Undo afterward if something goes wrong. This will ensure that even if nothing does go wrong during edits, there’s still a safety net available in case it does happen later on down the line.

Ensure you are using the most up-to-date version of your software. Do not save work in progress without saving it elsewhere first, just so that there’s always a copy on hand if something goes wrong and some changes have been made but haven’t yet saved back onto your computer.
