Like most things that we do, Bormann marketing is a pretty organic process. It’s not a big company that “puts people together” to make better marketing decisions. We actually have a pretty high bar for our marketing: A huge amount of research, a really long list of things we want to achieve, and a high ratio of ideas to execution. If you have a lot of ideas, it’s usually because you’ve been doing so for a while.
Bormann marketing is like many other marketing efforts that I’ve been involved with. We all have our own ideas of what we think is best and we’re really transparent about what we want to achieve. We make recommendations to our executives who then do the actual work and make the recommendations. In other words, its all about results.
One of the interesting things about Bormann marketing is that we like to think of ourselves as having a long-term, continuous view of what we want to achieve. Unfortunately, that can lead to a lot of short-term planning. I have a lot of ideas (and its usually something we’ve been discussing for a long while), but its hard to execute on them.
I often think of my career as a series of “I did, I did, I did, I did”. I’d like to think that I’m at least somewhat productive, but I think that my work life is a series of “I didn’t, I didn’t, I didn’t, I didn’t”.
Well, that’s why I love marketing. It’s the art of being able to say “yes, this is the future you need to work towards… and this is what we think you will like.” It takes a long time to get there, but once you do it’s easy to stay there. If you are thinking about marketing, then you probably have some ideas about what you want, and that’s great.
Sure. Well, actually, that’s just a few more examples of the same process. I mean, I know there are plenty of ways to say this, but I always get a “I don’t really like marketing” when I try to do it. I think at least half the reasons I avoid marketing is because it’s painful.
