I used to dye my browns the old-fashioned way. I would color the browns with my favorite homemade brown dye in a spray bottle, fill a bucket with dye, and set it down in a large pot of water. I would start the water boiling, dump the dye into the water, and let it boil for five minutes or so. I would then rinse off the dye and set it aside. The dye would then be set down to dry on the counter.
The old-fashioned way is the only way to dye our browns. We have to use the “natural” or “chemical” method. That’s what makes our browns look the most like burnt orange. It is the most honest way to dye, and it is the way that most of us will use.
Although dyeing your clothes is a no-no, there are ways to make your own browns. In fact, the more you experiment with it, the better you get. In this video, we’re shown how to dye our browns with a simple, natural method called “natural acid”. It’s the same method that we use when we dye our old sweatshirts when we go camping.
You can get a bunch of browns from a bottle of brown vinegar, but the natural acid method is probably the way to go. When we made the video we used the acid method to dye our shirts that we wore to church.
