I’ve really had this conversation with a bunch of new construction homeowners. They have a hard time deciding between their new home and their hobby lobby wood slices. They’re going to need all the help they can get and I thought I’d take the time to explain why this is such a crucial consideration.
Wood is a fantastic, inexpensive, and versatile building material. However, it can be an acquired taste. People love to decorate their homes with beautiful, attractive wood, which can be great if you like it. But, wood is expensive, very hard to find, and can be a big mess at the end of the day. You also don’t want to use too much of it anyway.
We all know that wooden objects can be made to look old, but wood is more than just “wood” to some. It is an inherently sustainable material that is also beautiful. I know it is a little confusing, but let me explain. Wood is a combination of tree trunks, dried and split bark, and wood chips. Basically, it is the result of an organism growing in a living tree, and once the trees die and the bark is removed, the wood chips are left.
It is a very interesting material, and I can see why it looks great. A lot of people are attracted to the color and the texture of the wood. You can get wood with a nice grain or one that is more “finished”. You can also use the wood itself to create objects that are made of wood, like furniture, vases, firewood, boats, and even toy cars.
There are two ways to use the wood. One is to use it as a replacement with other hardwoods like cherry, maple, oak, and birch. The other use it as a filler for anything from furniture to toys. We all see the work in progress and assume that it’s the result of a skilled artisan.
I think that’s what Hobby Lobby should be about. Everyone who lives in a house should be able to have a hobby, and should be able to do it with as little friction as possible if they have the time.
My first thought was, “how many homes have a hobby lobby?” It’s actually a really small percentage. Just two of the 101 million, or 14,737,852,000, with 8 million, or 7,878,974,000, in the USA.
