I’m not sure how I got into this one. I grew up in Texas and was always surrounded by red (or orange or yellow). I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve tried red dye. For each of those occasions, I was always disappointed. I could never get my head around the idea that it would darken my skin. And then I saw the ad for Tye Dye by H&M.
I guess it’s the same thing as when you see a red car on the side of the road, you don’t think, “Oh crap, I hope its not my car,” because you don’t really know until you see it. The problem with red dye, though, is that it’s a really strong oxidizer, and it can eat through any kind of material, including paint. It’s also possible to get a very faint tinge of red with just a touch of water.
To help out, I took the color chart of red to the store and used it to get a decent amount of red dye. I then applied it to my paint and got a lot of dark red. The main problem I had was the tinge of red from the dye. It almost seemed like the dye was just getting into the paint and eating through it. At least I think that’s what it was doing.
I tried it again next day, and it worked, but the problem was the same as the first. The dye just seemed to be eating through the paint and the tinge of red was so faint that it wasn’t noticeable. The same thing happened when I tried it the third day. I ended up having to do a coat of two different types of finish to get it back to a full red look.
I will admit there is a lot of potential for this kind of thing to happen, especially for people with sensitive skin and some kind of allergy. But I think its best to be patient and wait a few days for it to dry before trying again.
It’s also worth noting that when I tried red dye on my house (after the paint was dry) it left a very faint red tinge in the paint.
I used this to paint a base coat earlier this year, and it looks like you may be able to do this with a light coat too. Of course, you’ll also be able to get a pretty good red color just by using a red paint, and it’s not as noticeable as the tinting you have to do.
The use of red paint makes it so that when it dries it has a very strong red tinge (almost like red dye) to it. The tinting, however, is not as strong as the red dye, and you may have to wait a while for it to dry before using it again.
The difference between the two is that the red dye dries a little faster, it also has a very strong red tinge, and it’s more visible. However, the red dye is more permanent. Also, it takes more time to dry, so use it sparingly.
