request for proposal (RFP) is a form of prenegotiation that allows a company to get a brief proposal for a contract (either a fixed amount or a percentage) before negotiations begin. This allows companies to put together a formal proposal for a given project. It allows you to get a proposal together in advance of a negotiation between two parties, and to know exactly what you’re going to get and what you’re not.
Many of the RFPs start out as just a simple proposal for a contract. However, after a few rounds of the negotiation, the terms of the proposal can become more competitive. As a result, the RFPs can become more competitive even when the proposal is very simple.
A request for proposal is essentially a proposal for the terms of a contract. The job description should be a description of what they are able to do, how they did it, what their project was about, and why they want to work for you.
