I think most of us have a personal marketing plan (at least for ourselves). The question for the next marketing plan is what the next marketing plan looks like.
What is a marketing plan? It’s a plan for selling a product. A new product. A new website. A new store. A new app. A new event. A new campaign. A new promotion.
A business marketing plan is most often defined as a document that describes the steps to bring a product to fruition. In the traditional model, marketing was the part that brought the product to market. We want to create a business model with marketing being the engine that drives the business.
The problem with marketing being the engine is that it doesn’t always work. Think about it. You want to be the best player in the field. You want to create the best game in the world. What do you do? You put on your best game, and you hope that it lives up to your expectations. Then your marketing plan starts to come apart because its not always the case that your marketing plan is the best.
The problem is that marketing plans are usually made in the dark. We’re so excited for our game that we start thinking about what marketing campaigns will go well with our game. And then we realise that marketing campaigns are not always the best way to promote our game. Sometimes the best way to promote a game is the most obvious way. So the next step is to take a deep dive into the game, and we start to realize that marketing is the wrong thing to do.
Marketing campaigns are not always the best way to promote our game. But they are the most obvious thing and we start to look at our marketing plan and we see that it’s not about marketing, but about building relationships with players. We’re very close with our players, and we’re very close with our team. So it’s about building relationships.
The problem is when we try to promote ourselves and the game, instead of building relationships, we make marketing a huge part of the game. Like if we sell a product, we will probably get some sales, but if we sell a community, we will probably have the best of both worlds. So the next step is to create a marketing plan for this game. This step is very important because the marketing plan for a game can be very different from the marketing plan for a product.
